Radio Disney Awards 2017 Honors Britney Spears with Stunning Tribute

Disney has always been a powerhouse of new talents. In fact, a majority of the biggest names in Hollywood kick-started their career with Disney. There’s Selena Gomez, Hilary Duff, Ryan Gosling, and of course, pop culture icon Britney Spears. More than two decades ago, the young Britney Spears was a cast member of the Mickey Mouse Club. After leaving Disney, she rose to become a multi-platinum recording artist, actress, and author.

To celebrate Britney’s outstanding achievements and contributions to the industry, the Radio Disney Awards 2017 awarded her the first-ever Icon Award last April 29, 2017.

According to Phil Guerini, vice president of music strategy at Disney Channels Worldwide and the general manager of the Radio Disney Network, Britney was the perfect artist to honor this year because of her influence on old and new Disney fans.

“Having just celebrated 20 years of Radio Disney in 2016, we are excited to introduce the RDMA ‘Icon’ Award as special recognition of an artist whose music has been loved and adored by generations of Radio Disney fans,” Guerini said. “We are proud to celebrate Britney as the first recipient for this award, acknowledging her chart-topping career on Radio Disney since 1998.”

There to help celebrate the pop star’s career were singers Kelsea Ballerini, Hailee Steinfeld, and Sofia Carson. The trio performed a medley of Britney’s number one hits including “Oops!…I Did It Again,” “Circus,” and “Baby One More Time.” Cameras turned over to the audience to capture Britney together with her mom, Lynn, and sons Jayden and Preston singing along to the tunes.

For the finale, Jamie Lynn Spears joined the trio, leading Britney to stand and even shed a tear over her sister’s heartfelt rendition of “Till The World Ends.” After the performance, Jamie Lynn took the honor of handing the award to her older sis, calling Britney a “friend, hero, favorite pop star, and the best sister a girl could ever have.” In response to the warm reception, Britney thanked Disney studios for creating a big impact on her life.

The news comes on the heels of another exciting Disney announcement. It was recently announced that the studio will be reviving the Mickey Mouse Club, the same variety show where Britney and other Hollywood stars like Keri Russell and Christina Aguilera kick-started their career. As of this writing, no official date and cast have been set.
