5. Old Yeller (1957)
Old Yeller is known to be one of the most important films for baby boomers, and this acclaimed classic continues to receive love from animal lovers of every generation. It is actually based on a classic children’s book by Fred Gipson, which centers around a loyal dog and his journey with a young boy. Old Yeller also happens to feature one of the most emotional scenes in film history. Be warned, it is sure to melt even the hardest of hearts.
4. The Princess Diaries (2001)
Disney has been delivering fairy-tale stories over the years, so it was only fitting to finally unveil a princess that everyone can actually relate to. Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) is a teenager who is raised by a poor yet loving family. She is later unwillingly thrusted to spotlight after she discovers that she is next in line to the throne of Genovia. Based on the young adult novel by Meg Cabot, this modern take on the Cinderella story has both charm and heart and will certainly appeal to young women everywhere.
3. Tron (1983)
In an attempt to bring something new to the table, Disney decided to release something with an edgier tone. The result was one of the best live action Disney movies of all time—Tron. The story is all about a video game designer who is transported to the savage digital world he created himself. Tron spawned an equally successful sequel released in 2010, and as of August 2016, the studio announced that yet another film is currently in talks.
2. Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)
As one of the most successful film franchises in history, Pirates of the Caribbean is still a driving force 10 years since its initial release. The studio recently announced that the fifth installment Dead Men Tell Not Tales will be out next year. Both Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp are set to return for their roles as Will Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow respectively.
1. Mary Poppins (1964)
Mary Poppins is probably the most important Disney live action movies as it is considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. In fact, this was the first and only film from Disney to ever garner a Best Picture nod at the Academy Awards. But apparently, production for this historical film wasn’t always great as the author of the book it was based on, P.L. Travers, butted heads with the studio as the former didn’t appreciate the signature Disney touch on it.
Nonetheless, everything worked out in the end, and Mary Poppins stands to be number one on any cinephile’s list of significant live action Disney movies.
