Upcoming Live-Action Fairy-Tale Movies Announced by Disney

It is hard to find someone who won’t feel nostalgic at the mere mention of the words “fairy tale.” A lot of us had the privilege of growing up with these beloved stories, and even many others had the pleasure of seeing Disney’s classic animated features. Fast forward to the future, the major production is once again stepping up their game by introducing a set of live action films. This comes in the heels of other successful Disney titles released over the years such as the star studded live adaptation of The Jungle Book and the Angelina Jolie feature film Maleficent.

So sit back, relax, and check these upcoming live-action fairy tales that are sure to become bonafide hits:

1. Cruella

Emma Stone

Keeping up with the theme started by Maleficent back in 2014, Disney announced that yet another villain is set to star in her very own film. Amazing Spiderman actress Emma Stone is said to be in talks to play the titular role in the movie Cruella.

If you may recall, Cruella de Ville was the main antagonist in 1961’s 101 Dalmatians. She later went on to have her very first live action treatment when Glenn Close portrayed the character in both film adaptations. Seeing how well Close did only sets the expectations even higher, but that can be put to rest as we all know that Emma happens to be a very versatile actress and even has a number of film awards to prove that.

The film has not been given a release date as of this writing, though it has been said that Cruella should be released between 2018 and 2019.

2. A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle In Time

There is no doubt that A Wrinkle in Time stands to be one of the most beloved classics of all time, so news of yet another Disney adaptation sparked a lot of talk. After all, the first movie was a direct-to-video failure and garnered less than stellar reviews from critics. Even author Madeleine L’ Engle was not impressed, stating that the film had “not met her expectations.” Sadly, L’ Engle is no longer around to see if the next adaptation will suit her standards as the author passed away back in 2007.

Disney has long been teasing audiences on a possible adaptation since 2010. This was following the commercial success of Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland, and now it seems that the plan is beginning to finally unfold as Ava DuVernay is slated to direct and Oprah Winfrey is currently in talks to play the character Mrs. Which.

3. Dumbo

Speaking of Tim Burton, it seems like the man has yet another project with Disney. This time, it is a live-action adaptation of DumboThe movie is set to be a mixture of both CGI and live action, so that should answer anyone’s question on how the filmmakers would manage to squeeze a baby elephant in the room. Disney promises a new twist to the classic fairy tale and has even garnered the attention of animal rights group PETA, who petitioned for Burton to change the film’s ending.

4. Maleficent 2

Back in April, Disney officially announced that Angelina Jolie is set to return to the big screen as the iconic Disney villain. The first movie was obviously a success, grossing $758 million at the global box office amid mixed reviews. This is good news for fans of Jolie who want to see the award-winning actress grace the cinema again as she has been opting for directorial roles lately.

Disney released no further details pertaining the movie, but as far as everyone is concerned, as long as Angie is in the film, it is sure to be another hit for the studio.

5. Tinkerbell

Reese Witherspoon

Now here is one film that has been in the rumor mill for a while, but Disney has finally confirmed that a live action adaptation of Peter Pan’s winged companion is finally hitting the big screen. Tinkerbell is an origins story starring Reese Witherspoon, though it has not been confirmed if she will be taking on the title role.

That ends our list of the most exciting live action adaptations that are coming to cinemas really soon. Tell us, which ones are you most excited to see?
