Disney Films to Look Forward To in 2020

It’s the first month of the year, and already a lot of people are looking forward to one thing: the Disney films they’ll be watching this year. Every year, without fail, Disney has been producing dozens of movies that not only kids but the whole family can enjoy. In 2019 alone, they were able to release a slew of movies that not only made big bucks at the box office but also touched the hearts of moviegoers not just in the United States but also all over the world.

Last year, they released a lot of live-action versions, sequels, and remakes. This 2020, however, a lot more original films as well as adaptations are in the offing. The following are some of the most anticipated Disney movies that many people are looking forward to watching in theaters this 2020:

Disney Films to See This 2020

Onward, March 2020

This is a collaboration by Disney and Pixar, and it stars Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tom Holland, and Octavia Spencer. The setting of the animated film is a fantasy version of suburban America, where instead of ordinary humans, we’d see all sorts of mythical creatures such as fairies, trolls, elves, and unicorns go about their day like typical humans. This movie is a story about the special bond between brothers and between sons and fathers and is expected to hit theaters on March 6, 2020

Mulan, March 2020

This is perhaps Disney’s most anticipated movie this year. For several years now, Disney has been teasing us with news and rumors about the live action version of the cartoon classic Mulan. It stars Liu Yifei in the title role of Hua Mulan, who is a young Chinese girl that joins the Imperial Chinese Army disguised as a man in order to help defend her country against the invading Huns. Disney executives have been stating that this version is closer to the historical version than the original cartoon one. In fact, they raised not a few eyebrows when they announced that the male lead character of Captain Li Shang, Mulan’s love interest, would be absent from the adaptation. This film is expected in theaters on March 27, 2020.

Artemis Fowl, May 2020

Ever since Disney announced its plans to make a live action adaption of the bestselling novel by Eion Colfer entitled Artemis Fowl, this project has suffered many delays. It was originally set for an August 2019 release but got pushed back. Its final release date is on May 29, 2020. It follows the story of a twelve-year-old boy genius called Artemis Fowl, who comes from a family of brilliant criminals. He goes on a journey to search for his missing father, and on the way, he fights hordes of dangerous fairies in the aim to restore his family’s riches.

The One and Only Ivan, August 2020

This movie’s list of cast members reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood royalty—Angeline Jolie, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Danny DeVito, Ramon Rodriguez, and Helen Mirren all star in this adaptation of the bestselling book with the same title by K. A. Applegate. It follows the story of Ivan, an easygoing gorilla who has lived in captivity in the Big Top Mall for several decades. One day, Ivan realizes that there is more to the world than the reality he’s been exposed to for all those years, and he begins to think up schemes and plans on how to escape from captivity together with his other animal friends. This movie is still in post-production and doesn’t have a trailer yet, but it does have a release date: August 14, 2020.

Rava and the Last Dragon, November 2020

This animated film is an original film and is not based on any book or a previous version. It stars the voices of Cassie Steele and Awkwafina, and it features themes and elements about Southeast Asian culture. Steele and Awkwafina voice Raya and Sisu, the last dragon, respectively, and the setting is the realm of Lumandra, a mystical land where an ancient civilization thrives. Disney has marketed this as a holiday film, setting its release date on November 25, 2020, a few weeks before Christmas.
