Disney Channel is well-known for producing iconic TV movies. Some good examples include High School Musical, Johnny Tsunami, and all the Zenon films. The channel is currently enjoying success with the top-rated original movie The Descendants starring Dove Cameron and Sofia Carson. Disney is looking to continue their winning streak with a music-and-dance-filled production entitled Zombies.
Disney Channel’s ‘Zombies’ Begins Production
Zombie movies have been a staple in the horror movie genre for years. However, filmmakers are not afraid to mix them with other film categories such as comedy and romance. Disney Channel is looking to push the envelope even further with its first-ever zombie musical.
Zombies is set in the fictional suburban town of Seabrook. The town is dominated by traditions and conformity until transfer students from Zombietown come crashing into Seabrook High School. Two students, a cheerleader named Addison and Zombie football star Zed, break all the rules and fall in love. As soon as the school finds out about their forbidden romance, chaos ensues. It is up to Addison and Zed, along with their friends, to lead their community to work together.
Playing the lead characters are American Housewife‘s Meg Donnelly and actress Camryn Manheim‘s son Milo as Addison and Zed respectively. Rounding up the rest of the cast are Trevor Tordjman, Carla Jeffery, and Kylee Russell.
The screenplay for the new movie Zombies is written by David Light, Joseph Raso, and The Duff‘s Josh Cagan. Sitting in the director’s chair is Jeffrey Hornaday of Teen Beach Movie. His frequent collaborator, Effie Brown, will serve as chief choreographer and executive producer.
Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of original programming at Disney Channel, released this statement upon the announcement of Zombies:
“We’re thrilled to be working with Jeffrey Hornaday again to bring this new world of zombies and cheerleading to life. Jeffrey and Chris Scott have delivered some of our most memorable musical sequences on Disney Channel; and now with Effie Brown on board as an executive producer, we are excited to deliver this inspirational story about tolerance, inclusion, individuality and conviction—each relatable themes for our viewers.”
Zombies is scheduled for a 2018 release date.
